The Journey

A return to the moment

Every stop on this journey is chosen to slow the nervous system down — fewer destinations, deeper contact. We remove the rush of a checklist itinerary and replace it with space: space to notice, to breathe, to taste, to listen. Guests don't return home with more photos. They return with a different relationship to time.

You are not here to see Thailand. You are here to feel it.

What Makes This Journey

Three Practices

Built into the days rather than announced — three small rituals that carry the whole journey.

The Sensory Table

A mindful eating ritual practiced at select meals: Look → Smell → Taste → Chew → Pause. Before the first bite, guests observe the dish's color and form, breathe in its aroma, take a small taste and let it sit, then chew slowly — often 20–30 times — noticing texture change before swallowing. No phones at the table.

The Digital Sunset

Devices are put away from 6:00pm to 8:00am each day, held safely by the guide if requested.

Morning Silence

The first 30 minutes of each day are wordless: guests wake, walk, or sit before any conversation begins.

Day by Day

Your Private Itinerary

Seven days between two bases — your SALA curator can extend either stretch, or shift the island base by season.

A resort terrace beside rice fields, Chiang Mai

Day 1

Arrival, Chiang Mai

Chiang Mai

Theme: Arrive, then arrive again.

  • Private transfer from Chiang Mai airport, no itinerary briefing on arrival — just settling in
  • Check into a boutique riverside or forest-edge villa
  • Late afternoon: gentle walking orientation through the Old City's quiet backstreets — no temples yet, just noticing the rhythm of the city
  • Evening: welcome dinner practiced as a Sensory Table meal — five small Northern Thai dishes (khao soi, nam prik ong, sai oua) served one at a time
  • Early sleep encouraged. No agenda shared for tomorrow until morning
Two elephants together in long grass, northern Thailand

Day 2

Forest & Elephants

Chiang Mai Hills

Theme: Feel another being's breath.

  • Sunrise soft-start: tea on the villa terrace, Morning Silence practiced
  • Drive into the hills to a certified ethical elephant sanctuary (no riding, no performances, no chains) — walking, feeding, and bathing alongside rescued elephants, with silent sitting time
  • A guide shares each elephant's rescue story as an invitation to notice how the guest feels in their presence
  • Lunch at the sanctuary: rustic, communal, banana-leaf served
  • Afternoon: forest bathing walk (shinrin-yoku style) — noticing birdsong, canopy light, and the forest floor. A naturalist points out hornbills, bulbuls, and barbets by call alone
  • Evening: free, unstructured. Optional traditional Thai massage
Carrying baskets along hillside rice terraces at sunset, northern Thailand

Day 3

Chiang Mai Trekking

Doi Inthanon or Mae Wang

Theme: Earn the stillness.

  • Early departure to a hill-tribe trekking region (Doi Inthanon or Mae Wang, season-dependent)
  • Half-day guided trek through rice terraces, waterfalls, and forest trail — frequent stops built in rather than treated as delays
  • Visit a small Karen or Lisu hill-tribe village; lunch prepared with the community
  • Afternoon left open for rest, journaling, or a spa treatment
  • Dinner: quiet, at leisure — no ritual meal tonight, deliberately, so guests notice the contrast
Limestone karsts rising sheer from the sea in Phang Nga Bay, more fading into haze behind

Day 4

Travel Day, Reframed

Chiang Mai to the Andaman

Theme: The journey between is still the journey.

  • Late-morning private flight to Phuket (or Krabi, depending on final island base)
  • The flight itself is a mindfulness window — no work laptops, curated Thailand-inspired audio provided
  • Transfer by boat to a quiet island base, away from party-beach areas
  • Evening: light dinner, early rest. Sound of the sea as the digital sunset companion
Aerial view of forested limestone islands and turquoise water

Day 5

The Andaman Sea

Andaman Island Base

Theme: Weightlessness.

  • Full day private longtail boat to the Phi Phi / Similan-adjacent snorkelling grounds, 3–4 unhurried stops rather than a packed multi-site rush
  • Guided into slow, mindful snorkelling — floating in silence before swimming, noticing coral color and fish movement
  • Lunch on a secluded beach, barefoot, Sensory Table style with fresh-caught seafood grilled beachside
  • Late afternoon swim and float, sunset watched from the water
Granite boulders in turquoise surf at Chaweng Noi, Koh Samui

Day 6

Stillness Day

Andaman Island Base

Theme: Nothing to do, and that is the point.

  • No activities scheduled. This day exists to let everything absorb
  • Optional (never pushed): sunrise yoga, a second forest or beach walk, a Thai cooking class practiced with the Sensory Table ritual, or hammock time
  • Evening: closing dinner — guests are invited (not required) to share one moment from the trip that stayed with them
A beachfront resort pool and terrace shaded by palms

Day 7

Departure

Andaman Island Base

Theme: Carry it home.

  • Slow morning, no wake-up call — natural rising only
  • Final walk on the beach or garden with the guide, a short reflection on what "staying in the moment" felt like this week
  • Private transfer to the airport
  • Guests receive a take-home ritual card — a version of the Sensory Table practice to use with any meal, anywhere

Questions

What travellers ask

When is the best time to do The Presence Journey?

November through April, the Andaman coast's dry season — this matters most for the snorkelling day and the stillness day at the island base, where calm water lets the slow, mindful pace of the itinerary hold. Chiang Mai's own cool season (roughly the same months) also suits the forest walks and trekking.

Is this journey private or a group tour?

Entirely private. A single private guide accompanies you from arrival to departure, and every stage — the elephant sanctuary morning, the hill-tribe trek, the snorkelling day on the Andaman — is arranged for your own party, with no shared group departure.

How much can the itinerary be changed?

The seven-day, two-base structure — three days in the Chiang Mai hills, three on the Andaman, one to travel between them — is a framework your SALA curator rebuilds around your pace and dates. The Stillness Day (no activities scheduled) can be moved, extended, or dropped if you'd rather keep moving.

Does this journey involve riding elephants?

No. The elephant morning on this itinerary is at a certified ethical sanctuary — no riding, no performances, no chains. Guests walk, feed, and bathe alongside rescued elephants, with silent sitting time built in rather than any staged encounter.
